How do you choose the right ACP Sheets for your project?
Choosing the right ACP sheets for your project is a crucial decision that can significantly impact its aesthetic appeal, durability, and overall performance . To ensure you make the best choice, consider the following factors:
Purpose and Application:Determine the intended use of ACP sheets - whether it's for architectural cladding, interior design, signage, or another application. ALUCOBOND® offers a range of ACP sheets tailored to diverse applications.
There are 6 important attributes that you need to understand and consider before making any decision.
Alloy of the Aluminum skin
Ask which alloy is used to manufacture your ACP. Ask if it is made from Marine grade alloy. Most of the mega cities in the world are coastal and therefore exposed to salty environments. Always look for noncorrosive marine grade aluminum alloy of 5xxx series for such projects. This alloy also gives high protection from pollution and weathering
Alucobond Composite panels made from Marine Grade 5xxx series are more resistant to corrosive atmosphere ensuring longevity of the facades. They are readily workable and can be welded or brazed.
Skin thickness plays a major role in the strength of panels. Thinner skin reduces the panel’s ability to withstand abuse during fabrication, handling & load cycles like wind load etc.
Because of the thinner skin the stiffness of the panel reduces. This causes uneven flatness, limitations with system design and improper installation. For instance, less than 0.5mm aluminum skin is not recommended for high rise buildings.
Thickness of the panel itself
Lower and uneven thickness make the panels weak. They cause irreversible defects in panels through its life span. Thickness gives strength to the panels which in-turn allows higher panel lengths reducing the number of joints. This gives a seamless look to the facade allowing higher design freedom. For example, 4mm thick panel with 0.5mm thickness of aluminum skin is recommended for architecture facades
Core of the ACP Panel
Good fire retardant ACP core should contain at least 70% mineral content whereas a non-combustible ACP with A2 classification should have at least 90% mineral content. This is only possible with high-end technology and process that can accurately formulate the core on special equipment.
To assess fire retardancy, EN 13501 -1 is the standard to be followed. Check if the core is made from fire retardant material qualifying Class B or higher.
It should also be noted that no single test covers all relevant aspects of performance of Fire Resistant (FR) ACM. This is because the building facade is a combination of ACM and fixing system hence to ensure FR performance this test should be done in combination of system test such as NFPA 285 or BS 8414.

Paint/ Coating system of ACP
There are various paint finishes that are used for different performances. Such as Polyester, HDP, PVDF and FEVE. Different paint coating layers and thickness will give you different performance.
AAMA 2605 or ECCA standards can only be achieved when paint has 70% PVDF/FEVE resin content.
To ensure consistency of paint thickness and top-notch quality ACM color coating is always done on highly automated continuous colour coating lines specially designed for Aluminum coils. Check this important parameter before deciding on ACM.
Bad quality lamination spoils the look and life of the panels in a very short time. Inferior or Insufficient adhesion between core and Aluminium skin causes panels to delaminate over a period of time
Good quality lamination gives strength to the composite panels. They also ensure that the panels look new and fresh throughout their lifespan.
It is tempting to cut corners in order to save cost in the short run. Most aluminum composite panels do not adhere to strict quality standards and do not have these big six qualities
